The story of Tomorrow, Tomorrow, Tomorrow, which had its world premiere as part of the U.S. Competition of DOC NYC 2023, started fifteen years ago. In 2008 Martina Radwan, a veteran New York-based cinematographer for films such as Saving Face (2012, which won an Emmy, IDA Documentary Award, and Academy Award for best short documentary), was sent by the United Nations to shoot a short documentary about street children in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

Martina Radwan is a New York-based DP who has shot narrative and documentary projects across the globe. Her most recently released documentaries include Saving Face (2012 Academy Winner for Best Documentary Short, 2013 Emmy for Best Documentary), for which Radwan was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Cinematography, Through a Lens Darkly, William Kunstler: Disturbing the Universe and Hot Coffee and can be seen on national and international screens, as well as HBO, Showtime and PBS. Her directorial debut Spring in Awe received the Media Awareness Award at the Media That Matters Film Festival, 2004, as well as the Best Editing Award at the Brooklyn Film Festival. Her second film Aliens Among Us was part of DocuWeek 2009. Martina’s narrative work includes feature film Under Construction, directed by Rubaiyat Hossein and filmed in Bangladesh; The Killing Floor, a thriller produced by Doug Liman and Avi Arad, directed by Gideon Raff, the horror film Train a Millennium Films Production, also directed by Gideon Raff; Singapore Dreaming, one of the first Singaporean feature productions and winner of several international awards; and Rain, the first indigenous film of the Bahamas, by Maria Govan. The documentary Food and Country, which premiered at the 2023 Sundance film festival, takes a close look at the broken food system in the United States through the lens of the COVID pandemic, as restaurants closed and both workers and farmers struggled. Both director Laura Gabbert and producer/chef/food writer Ruth Reichl grew concerned about their friends and colleagues in the restaurant business during the shutdown. Laura wanted to do a short piece about how restaurants and workers were being affected, so she connected with Ruth through a mutual friend. Ruth began checking in over Zoom with people she knew, originally just as research. Ruth followed her own curiosity as she spoke with dozens of people across the country. As a seasoned chef and food writer, Ruth is good at getting people to open up, and people felt safe talking to her. The shutdown also made people feel very isolated and vulnerable, so over time, they were able to record incredibly intimate conversations. Laura began to see a more comprehensive documentary taking shape: the pandemic was only exacerbating the problems that already exist in the American food system. They began widening the scope of the film, and when it was safe to travel again, Laura and cinematographer Martina Radwan went out to shoot and interview farmers, ranchers and restaurant owners in the field.
