Here are more good things that Executive David Byrd are doing at Schenectady YMCA, under the leadership of CEO/President Dave Brown:"Good afternoon!I hope this email finds you doing well. I am reaching out today to bring awareness to, two summertime programs here at the Schenectady YMCA that I am very excited about.First, is our ‘Youth In Motion’ camp. YIM is a free 10 day camp for youth ages 8-12. The YMCA has partnered with SPAC to offer a very unique experience, culminating in an evening with the NYC Ballet. The second, is our ‘Running Start’ program. RS is a back to school program that serves kids in Schenectady County who are in financial need. Through RS kids will receive a backpack full of school supplies, a $100 Walmart gift card and other items at no cost. Flyers for registration are attached for both programs. If you can please help us spread the word, it would be greatly appreciated. The summer time is an exciting time here at the YMCA. Summer programming and camp fun, makes me wish I was a kid again! Thank you for your time and consideration.David ByrdExecutive DirectorCAPITAL DISTRICT YMCASchenectady YMCA433 State Street Schenectady, NY 12305518.881.0117dbyrd@cdymca.orgwww.cdymca.org"

"Communities are not built of friends, or of groups within similar styles and tastes, or even of people who like and understand each other. They are built of people who feel they are part of something that is bigger than themselves: a shared goal or enterprise, like righting a wrong, or building a road, or raising children, or living honorably, or worshiping God. To build community requires only the ability to see value in others: to look at them and see a potential partner in one's enterprise.”~Suzanne Goldsmith. That's for my community builder friends: I just thought you'd appreciate that one. *Added a few thoughts after sleeping on it: Are we translating or are we building access bridges? Are we merely making money or enabling the funding of opportunities? Are we directing/managing people or helping them thrive? Are we merely speaking or are we clarifying and avoiding confusion? #localization #community

"Although marked by a profound sense of loss, it nonetheless feels appropriate that this issue of the journal contains a review of what sadly proved to be Patsy Healey’s final book." In his review of Caring for Place: Community Development in Rural England, Stephen Connelly writes:"Healey had twin purposes for the book: to present a way of analysing 'the complexity of micro-social dynamics' (p. xii) of governance, drawing on a wide range of scholarship but always underpinned by her own social institutionalist perspective, and through this to support those searching for 'ways to contribute to the future' (p. xii). As ever, there is a strong normative element in her work: the analysis is to serve the purpose of furthering progressive governance through the positive power of self-organising communities. She does this through showcasing the achievements and struggles of real people, in an extended single case study which (like the best of such studies) sets out both the micro-detail and how this links to macro-structures and processes. Despite the rather misleading subtitle, this is not 'community development' in its usual sense of a familiar set of practices, but a book about the development of a community, and an honest evaluation of its achievements."Check out Connelly's full review of Patsy Healey's final book, available here: https://lnkd.in/dR5jZxtx

Community Building In Action It’s impossible to build a community alone. We have built a community in Common Sense this was from what we felt was missing to help us. Ronan Leonard turned to the bestbooks out there to work out how to improve what we already started. “Build Your Community” by Richard Millington and “The Business of Belonging” by David Spinks were invaluable in helping us understand ways to add more services to support everyone. Reading these books helped us understand the power of network effects – that become more valuable as more people know, like and trust you. Combining this with communicating your ethos – our is abundance, reciprocity and relationships over transactions - you attract more of the right people who believe what you believe, but more importantly, act in a way consistent with their beliefs. What do you look for in your community?

Coaches, you don't need another course, another conference, another training (I'm guilty too). You do need:1. Curiosity - to learn what you'd like. 2. Community - to grow together. 3. Accountability - to set the stakes.
